Welcome to the wonderful world of email, and now a few unsolicited words from our would be sponsors. As soon as you discover how easy it is to keep in touch with your daughter in Fresno you learn how easy it is for everyone who's selling anything to keep in touch with you. It's called "Spam". It's unsolicted commercial email, it's inappropriate and it's illegal. It's also something we will all have to deal with sooner or later so on this page are some ways to do just that.

1- Delete. The easiest and fastest way to deal with spam is to make expiditious use of the 'Delete' key. This is the passive way of dealing with spam. It is fast, it is easy but it does nothing to diminish the amount of spam recieved.

2- Reply. Replying to a spam's request that if you don't want any further contact just "reply with the word 'remove' as the subject" does not work and just gets you on more lists.

3- Report. This is the active way of dealing with spam. It requires a modest amount of time and effort but it can diminish the amount of spam recieved. To report a spammer one determines the spammers isp or email provider by reading the header then forward's the offensive missive to their provider with an short but appropiate note that this practice is unwelcome.

Determining the origin of a spam can be as difficult as you want it to be because most spammers try to mask their true addresses. The definitive FAQ for tracing an email is listed below in the resources section, but if one reads the header carefully and forwards the spam to the apparent source, they generally track down the true address and forward it on.

Below are the addresses of several email providers where one can report email abuse. "abuse@provider.whatever" is the generally accepted syntax for reporting addresses. To use the ones below.. click on the name of the provider.. type 'Spam' as the subject.. copy the text below into the body of the message.. then copy the entire unsolicted commercial email, including all the header information to your message and send it. Time is of the essence when reporting spam as the spammers original message with tracking information may not be kept on the provider's server for more than a week.
